Biographical Sketch

Aicheng Chen received his Ph.D. in 1998 from the University of Guelph under the supervision of Prof. Jacek Lipkowski. He then spent two years working as a Research Scientist at Huron Tech Canada Inc. and two years as an Electrochemical Specialist at FINNCHEM Canada Inc., Kingston, Ontario. In 2002 he joined Lakehead University as an Assistant Professor where he was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2005. His research interests span the areas of Electrochemistry, Bioelectrochemistry, Green Chemistry, Materials Science and Nanotechnology, encompassing some major issues that are critical to the mining and pulp & paper industries and to the sustainable development of natural resources in Canada. His research team has successfully designed and studied a number of scientifically important nanomaterials including super-hydrophobic tin oxide nanoflowers, well-aligned titanium dioxide nanorod arrays and nanoporous platinum based networks for Green Chemistry applications and novel electrochemical sensor design. Dr. Chen was nominated as a Young Observer to participate in the 43rd IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) General Assembly in 2005. He has been awarded the Premier’s Research Excellence Award in 2003; a Young Chemist Program Award by the Committee of the 40th IUPAC Congress in 2005; the Canada Research Chair in Material & Environmental Chemistry in 2005; an Invitation Fellowship from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) in 2006; a CNC/IUPAC Travel Award in 2008; and the  Fred Beamish Award of the Canadian Society for Chemistry in 2009.
